A cornerstone for the built environment and the building industry as a whole, MOT type 1 is all around you – though you might not know it!
But what is MOT type 1?
The recycled aggregate experts at Grundy & Co Ltd reveal everything you need to know about this fundamental to the fabric of the built industry.
What is MOT type 1?
MOT, or Ministry of Transport, aggregates are granular sub-bases used most often in construction or civil engineering.
There are four types of MOT aggregates and MOT type 1 is the most commonly used type as it has hardwearing material that can be compacted to provide a solid foundation.
Manufactured from a mix of previously used demolition materials and quarried rock and stone, it can be used for a staggering selection of applications.
It is available in a size range from 40mm to dust.
How is MOT type 1 used?
As it has been certified by the Ministry of Transport, MOT type 1 can be used for public road construction, as well as a base for:
- Buildings
- Car parks
- Driveways
- Footpaths and garden paths
- Patios
- Ponds
- Sheds
- Trench and over-site fills

How are MOT type 1 aggregates manufactured?
Standard MOT type 1 materials are made from higher levels of quarried stone and rock, including granite, basalt, gritstone, or carboniferous limestone – depending on the type.
This places more demand on the natural environment as more and more material must be harvested to keep up with ever-increasing building needs.
As such, there is now a growing market for recycled MOT aggregates, which use smaller or even minimal amounts of stone or rock and rely on recovered demolition materials taken from the surrounding area.
In the case of recycled aggregates from Grundy & Co, the manufacturing process includes:
Recovery – demolition materials are recovered from across the North West.
Washing and sorting – these materials are then brought back to the processing plants where they are washed and sorted according to size.
Storage and delivery – finally, the MOT is stored before being bagged or delivered to our customers.
MOT aggregate delivery
If you need to order MOT type 1 or other aggregates for your building project, you will be able to choose from either bagged or loose-tipped delivery to your site.
This choice between bagged or loose delivery via tipper trucks is up to you and your preferences.
Benefits of bagged delivery | Considerations of bagged delivery | Benefits of loose delivery | Considerations of loose delivery |
Saves space on-site. Easier to keep sites clean and tidy as the aggregate is confined. Can move aggregate if needed elsewhere later down the line. | Still requires specialist delivery from lifting vehicles thanks to the weight and size. May take more manpower to unload and transport where needed. | Can be delivered on-site exactly where you need it – reducing manual labour to move it. Can add MOT type 1 to existing stockpiles. Can make access easier than bagged aggregates. | Can require manpower to clean up the aggregate when delivered. Can’t easily move the goods once delivered. |
No matter which method you choose for delivery, our team aim to deliver MOT type 1 aggregates in as little as 48 hours from the point of order. In some cases, it may be possible to deliver in less than 24 hours – we can let you know when you contact us.
