What does MOT Type 1 stand for?

The initialism ‘MOT’ stands for Ministry of Transport, while the number refers to the type based on its material composition and particle size. This means that an MOT aggregate has been categorised by the Ministry of Transport as an approved granular sub-base material.

While the former Ministry is now the Department for Transport in the UK, these categories remain.

MOT Type 1 aggregates are primarily comprised of crushed concrete and stone materials recovered from site clearances, ranging from 40mm to dust. They are strong but compactible.

Whilst it is essentially a hard material, when used as a starter layer, aggregates must be compacted before upper layers are added, or the gaps will compromise its supportive quality.

Type 1 is the most commonly used MOT aggregate because it is extremely reliable.

What is Type 1 MOT aggregate used for?

Type 1 hardcore meets the Department for Transport specification for highway works in terms of its strength, size, and composition for use as a compact sub-base in construction and engineering.

Available to buy in bulk, it typically forms the sublayer for roads, pavements, and driveways.

Thanks to its hardwearing properties, an MOT Type 1 sub-base provides a load-bearing, stable layer and an even surface, ready for a top coating such as asphalt, concrete shingle, or block paving.

This foundation can be used for public roads, car parks, paths, patios, sheds, ponds, and more.

Benefits of using an MOT hardcore sub-base:

The many benefits of using MOT Type 1 aggregates as a base layer include:

Superior strength – Made from tough materials like crushed concrete, granite, and basalt, it can distribute weight evenly to prevent cracking or sinking under loads.

Solid compaction – When compacted, the fine dust particles fill in the gaps between the stones, locking them together to form a movement-resistant surface.

Moisture-resistant – Comprised of larger stones, crushed concrete aggregate assists with drainage, so it won’t wash away easily during harsh weather conditions.

Cost-effective – Easier and cheaper to source than limestone, MOT Type 1 aggregates are versatile enough for use in multiple projects and simple to install.

Eco-friendly – Recycled MOT Type 1 is sustainably sourced from construction waste, reducing the environmental impact of projects by sending less to landfill.

Providing affordable, locally sourced hardcore materials with excellent load-bearing capacity, you can count on Grundy & Co to provide high-quality aggregates for a variety of applications.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Please find below a list of frequently asked questions from our customers

When should you use MOT Type 1 aggregates?

MOT Type 1 building material meets the requirements of the Department for Transport Specification for Highways Work (SHW) and is certified for public road construction.

Other uses of Type 1 MOT aggregates include:

    • Building bases
    • Car parks
    • Driveways
    • Footpaths
    • Highways
    • Patios
    • Ponds
    • Sheds
    • Trench fills
    • Backfills
    • Over-site fills

Our Type 1 sub-base will compact well and is the perfect product to create a solid foundation for your construction project – whether you’re laying a hardcore base for a patio, driveway, or artificial grass.

Although it’s already one of the most aesthetically pleasing aggregates, once levelled out, a weed membrane can be added to the MOT Type 1 sub-base and topped off with attractive gravel.

In addition to Type 1 hardcore for garden works, we can also provide decorative garden stone.

How much does MOT Type 1 hardcore cost?

Type 1 aggregate prices can vary considerably depending on whether you buy loose aggregate or bulk bags of aggregates, and how much you require in total.

However, this aggregate is highly cost-effective and popular because of how easy it is to manufacture.

It works out slightly cheaper if you opt for loose aggregate, but here at Grundy & Co Excavations, we offer bulk discounts and can deliver MOT Type 1 hardcore to your site in as little as 48 hours.

To discuss your requirements with the team and to get a quote per tonne of MOT Type 1, get in touch.

How much MOT Type 1 do I need?

As one of the major players in the recycled aggregates industry, the Grundy & Co Excavations team will gladly assist you in calculating how much MOT Type 1 hardcore you need for your project.

As a general rule of thumb, 1 tonne of MOT Type 1 will cover around 10 square metres in a 50mm thick layer. You may need more 1-tonne bulk bags of MOT Type 1 to create thicker layers.

Not sure how to calculate the right quantity? If you would prefer to discuss your requirements with an expert, either call or fill out the enquiry form and we’ll get back to you with more information, and even offer a free, no-obligation quote for your estimated amount.

If you already know the amount you require, be sure to contact us to place an order today.

How does MOT Type 1 aggregate compare with MOT Type 2?

MOT Type 1 is an aggregate that’s made up of various materialsin sizes from 40mm to fine dust. Type 1 hardcore is commonly used for domestic and commercial applications, such as bulk fill, levelling, and a sub-base for patios, driveways, pavements, and gardens.

On the other hand, Type 2 MOT aggregate is composed of fewer angular stones (also known as scalpings), forming a finer type of crushed aggregate with more clay and silt.

Containing smaller particles from 0mm to 20mm, it has a lower load-bearing capacity than Type 1 because of its looser compaction, but this composition also allows for better drainage than Type 1.

This type of aggregate can form a free-draining base for paths, walkways, and driveways, and can also be used as a backfill material or to fill potholes where there is a lighter load.

Unsure whether MOT Type 1 or Type 2 is right for you? Call Grundy & Co to discuss your requirements with our team, and we can recommend the most suitable aggregate for your needs.

How much notice do you need to deliver MOT Type 1?

At Grundy & Co, we always aim to deliverhigh-quality Type 1 hardcore safely and on time.

We usually ask that customers give us at least 48 hours’ notice. However, we may be able to deliver MOT Type 1 within 24 hours, depending on your location, the scale of your project, and our availability.

Our best advice when ordering aggregates is to contact us as soon as possible, especially if you’re embarking on your project during a busy time of year. This will allow you to choose when you would like us to deliver Type 1 hardcore to your preferred address.
