MOT Type 1

MOT Type 1

Here at Grundy & Co Excavations Ltd, we provide an extensive range of recycled aggregates for the construction trade – one of these being MOT type 1.

What is MOT type 1 hardcore?

Type 1 hardcore is an approved granular sub base material, comprised primarily of crushed concrete, which typically forms the sublayer for roads, pavements and driveways. It meets the requirement of the department of transport specification for highway works in terms of its strength, size and composition for use as a compact sub base.

What is it used for?

Thanks to its hardwearing properties, the MOT type 1 sub base provides a load bearing stable layer, and a flat even surface, ready for a top coating of asphalt, concrete shingle or block paving.

Whilst it is essentially a hard material, it must be compacted before the upper layers are added, otherwise, gaps will compromise its supportive quality. Fortunately, our type 1 sub base will compact down well and is the perfect product to create a solid foundation to start off your construction project – whether it be creating a hardcore base for laying a patio, driveway or artificial grass.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Please find below a list of frequently asked questions from our customers

When should MOT type 1 aggregate be used?

MOT type 1 is a granular sub-base material that meets the requirements of the Department of Transport Specification for Highways Work (SHW) and is certified for public road construction.
Other uses of Type 1 MOT include:
    • Building bases
    • Car parks
    • Driveways
    • Footpaths
    • Highways
    • Patios
    • Ponds
    • Sheds

Although it’s one of the most aesthetically pleasing aggregates, once levelled out, a weed membrane can be added to the MOT type 1 sub-base and topped off with attractive gravel.

A huge bonus of this type of crushed concrete aggregate is that it assists with drainage and is comprised of larger stones which means it won’t wash away easily during harsh weather conditions.

How much does MOT type 1 hardcore cost?

The price of MOT type 1 hardcore can vary considerably depending on whether you wish to buy loose aggregate or bulk bags and how much you require. However, this aggregate is highly cost-effective and popular because of how easy it is to manufacture.

It works out slightly cheaper if you opt for loose aggregate but, here at Grundy & Co Excavations, we offer bulk discounts and can deliver it to your site in Cheshire or Merseyside, within as little as 48 hours.

To discuss your requirements with the team and to get a price for MOT type 1, feel free to call 0151 257 8816.

I don’t know how much I need. Can you help?

Of course! Grundy & Co Excavations is one of the major players in the recycled aggregates industry and will gladly assist you in calculating how much MOT type 1 hardcore you need to complete your project.

As a general rule of thumb, 1 ton of MOT type 1 will cover 1.98 cubic metres (or 10.1 square metres) at 50mm thick.

However, if you’d prefer to discuss your requirements with an expert, we’d be more than happy to help. Just fill out the enquiry form and we’ll get back to you with more information. We’ll even offer a free, no-obligation quote.
If you already know the amount you require, be sure to place an order today.

How does MOT Type 1 aggregate compare with MOT Type 2?

MOT Type 1 is an aggregate that’s made up of various materials, including limestone, crushed concrete and granite.

Type 1 hardcore is commonly used for domestic and commercial applications, such as bulk fill, levelling, and a sub-base for patios, driveways, pavements and gardens. When levelled out, a suitable membrane can be applied and then topped off with attractive gravel.

MOT Type 2, on the other hand, is a finer type of crushed aggregate – composed of fewer angular stones (also known as scalpings).

This type of aggregate compacts nicely to form a free-draining base for paths, walkways, patios and driveways, and can also be used as a backfill material or to fill potholes.

Unsure whether MOT Type 1 is right for you? Call Grundy & Co on 0151 257 8816 to discuss your requirements with our team. We’ll then be able to recommend the most suitable aggregate for your needs.

How much notice do you need to deliver MOT Type 1?

At Grundy & Co, we aim to please our customers – delivering Type 1 hardcore safely and on time.

We usually ask that you give us at least 48-hours’ notice, where possible. However, we may be able to deliver MOT Type 1 within 24-hours, depending on your location, the scale of your project and our availability.

Our best advice when ordering aggregate is to contact us as soon as possible, especially if you’re embarking on your project during our busiest time of the year. This will allow you to choose when you’d like us to deliver Type 1 hardcore to your preferred address.
